Holiday Change Freeze

In preparation for the holiday season, we are announcing a holiday change freeze from Monday, December 19, 2016, 12:00 a.m. to Wednesday, January 4, 2017, 11:59 p.m. MT, inclusive.

The holiday change freeze affects Service Alberta internal and external service providers responsible for making changes. During this period, Service Alberta and its partner service provider teams are not permitted to make non-standard or non-emergency changes to any IT resources (e.g. applications, infrastructure, processes and procedures, documentation, etc.) that support the delivery of IT services to customers. Change Requests submitted in advance of the change freeze will not be scheduled for implementation during this period. In addition, any Change Requests submitted during this period for proposed changes to be implemented after the change freeze may not be reviewed by ICT Change Management until the change freeze is over.

Standard Changes

Pre-approved standard changes (which can be identified in Service Alberta’s list of approved standard changes) may be submitted and implemented during the change freeze. Standard changes typically have no service impact. If a standard change is expected to have a service impact, this impact will be communicated to customers via the service outage communication process.

Emergency Changes

If an emergency change must be implemented to resolve an incident or problem during this period, such a change may be implemented on the authority of appropriate service owner(s) or their delegate(s) (which may be a team lead, manager, or director), with a latent Change Request to be submitted after the fact.

Note: This change freeze only applies to Change Management-related activities, and not activities associated with other processes (e.g. service request fulfillment, project related activities, etc.).

A holiday change freeze is being imposed for a number of reasons:

  • Support team resources are often limited during the holiday period; required resources may not be available to support the change, and the resolution of any unanticipated effects of change implementation may be significantly delayed.
  • Service outage or service change communiqués associated with changes scheduled during this period may not be received by affected customers and users, as many of them may be away from the office during the break.
  • Various Change Management resources, such as Change Managers, Change Assignees, and Change Board members may not be available to manage and approve submitted Change Requests during this period.

A holiday change freeze significantly reduces the impact and risks of implementing changes during the holiday break.
